2021 TOURNAMENT Report

By Sue Doncaster

This was played at Tarka Tennis Centre during September.

Regrettably, numbers this year were down to half the entries for those in previous years – possibly as a result of the effect of covid and players’ fear of playing inside, possibly because it was played in autumn, and not in spring, before the start of the League season, as it has been in the recent past,   We will never know. We had to cancel the over 60’s mixed doubles as there were insufficient entries, but all other events went ahead, and competitors had the opportunity to play several matches.

Matt Johns and Teresa Poole, again partnering each other, retained the Open Mixed Doubles crown, and successfully defended their other respective titles.

We were once again grateful to the Tarka Centre for the use of their courts.

About the tournament

By Sue Doncaster

This annual Tournament normally takes place indoors at Tarka Centre, either February/March, or September/October. This year, we have abandoned any attempt to play it in the spring, but we are hoping that scheduling for the autumn will be possible. Enquiries have been made to Tarka for the availability of their courts, but as it is currently shut and all staff furloughed, we have not yet had a response.

It isn’t a ratings tournament, and the format may appear less formal than a conventional KO event, but nevertheless it is still highly competitive.

Events are played on dedicated time slots over 3 weeks: on Friday evenings and during the day at weekends, with exception of the over 60’s mixed doubles which is played on a weekday. All events are played in a round robin format, using a sudden death deuce, with the result being decided on games scored, (not on a conventional set).  The number of games to be played isn’t always the same for each event – this can vary according to the number of entries and court time available.

On the last weekend, the semi-finals are played Friday night or Saturday, and all Finals on the Sunday.

Events: Men’s and Ladies’ singles. Men’s and Ladies’ doubles. Open mixed doubles. Over 50’s mixed doubles. Over 60’s mixed doubles.

2020 Tournament

This year, the Tournament reached the semi-final stage and was then interrupted by the lockdown caused by covid19, with no idea if or when it would be possible to continue.

After some months, when doubles play was finally permitted, all the competitors were contacted, and were keen to continue. It was then agreed that players arranged their own matches, rather than the committee attempt to organise all semi-finals and finals over one weekend as would have originally been scheduled.

Matt Johns came out winner of all three events he entered, and his mixed doubles partner Teresa Poole won three of the four she entered, only losing a closely contested ladies’ singles to youngster Katie Rowe.

RESULTS:

Men’s singles – Matt Johns beat Andy Walder 6.0, 6.2

Ladies’ singles – Katie Rowe held on to her title, beating Teresa Poole 3.6, 6.4, 10.6., in a repeat of last year’s final.

Men’s doubles – Matt Johns & Billy Pearce beat James McRae & Alex Wingent 6.0, 6.2.  In the semi-finals, senior players James & Alex carried off a successful defeat of youngsters Alex Styles & Kieran Rattigan, but were not able to repeat this against another youthful pairing of Matt & Billy.

Ladies’ doubles – Teresa Poole & Alli Swinton in defence of their title, beat Cath Andrews & Helen O’Toole 6.0, 6.3.

Mixed doubles – Matt Johns & Teresa Poole beat Tom Poole & Jemma Sloman 6.1, 6.4. in a reverse of last year’s final, when the same pairs met and Tom & Jemma beat Matt & Teresa.

Over 50’s mixed doubles – Alex Wingent & Teresa Poole beat Andrew & Alli Swinton 4.6, 6.3, 10.3

Over 60’s mixed doubles – John Norman & Helen Beer beat Steve Hunt & Marian Vinall 6.4, 7.6 (10.8).
